It’s time for a check-in: How are your young adults doing?

Here at Cutting Edge, we are still seeing kids of all ages, including young adults. If your child has just graduated, or if they’re approaching their junior or senior year, or if you’re planning for their transition to college or life outside of school—we can help with that.

Skills The Checklist Covers

When you reach a transition stage like that you might be wondering, “What does my kiddo need to learn how to do?” Well, we have created a Transitioning-to-Adulthood checklist! This is a long checklist and it covers all the skills your young adult might need to be able to do in order to transition into their next phase. It covers vocational skills, financial skills, social participation skills (this is very important for our kids who will be taking on a new job or going into a new school). We also cover academic performance skills, and leisure skills—it’s important that when they go off to school or work that they maintain their leisure skills!

How To Get The Checklist

You are welcome to reach out to your therapist, or to the front office, to request a copy of the checklist. This is so helpful for you to have at home, and you can look through it and find the areas where you think your child might need some extra help.

Our Practice “Apartment”

We have a great area for helping young adults learn skills. We have a practice apartment set up with a pull-down bed, so that we can work on bed-making skills. We have the appliances to work on laundry, cooking, cleaning, washing dishes—everything your children will need to transition them into that next phase of life.

Your Next Step

If you are interested in getting a little bit of extra help with these skills, or if you’re not sure whether you need some extra help, feel free to reach out to our front office. They will be happy to set up a screening appointment for you. At that screening, we will meet with your young adult and with you, and help you to decide whether occupational therapy, speech therapy, or physical therapy is a great solution for any issues you might be having.

If you are unsure about whether your child will be able to successfully navigate these transitions, reach out and let us know. We’ll be happy to get you this checklist and get you headed in the right direction!
