Speech Therapists

We have found that there are some common misconceptions people have about speech therapy.  Let’s break them down here:

Flash Cards:

One misconception people often have is that speech therapy deals with lots of flashcards, drills, and lots of work with pen and paper. They might think that speech therapy means sitting at a desk and working on sounds or words.

But here at Cutting Edge, we are much more likely to move into the gym and do work on the swings or in the tunnels. We use the rock walls to help the kids integrate their sensory issues. In general, we like to use the whole body while incorporating work on the speech skills, such as having conversations while doing the physical activities.

Why We Use Our Gyms:

Why do we do this? It makes learning a lot more natural and tied into the everyday world, and not something that the child just associates doing at a desk. Also, working in the gym is a lot less structured—just like life! In the everyday world, the child will have to use speech skills in unstructured ways, and this helps them make that adaptation. That’s how life is—you never know what’s going to happen next!

At Cutting Edge, we love to take skills into the real world!

If you have any speech concerns about your child, give us a call! We would love to set up an appointment with you and see how we can help you address those issues. Our speech therapists can give you an in-depth assessment on your child to see if he or she can benefit from speech therapy.

We offer specialized, one-on-one interventions for all our clients, and we are more than happy to talk to you about any concerns you may have about your child’s development.
