The Importance of Consistency With Occupational Therapy
Today we’re going to talk about the importance of consistency with occupational therapy. Simply put, therapy works best when a child can attend every session, for the whole length of the session.
Illness and Holidays:
Of course, we do understand that life happens! Sometimes parents have to miss an appointment because someone was sick, or there’s a family emergency, or because of a holiday.
But it’s important to remember that consistency in therapy is very important for a child’s progress, and we want every child to make as much progress in therapy as possible. When a child misses therapy sessions it can slow down that progress and that child may end up needing therapy longer than she otherwise would. We understand when life happens, but we want to encourage everyone to make as many of the sessions as consistently as they can.
The Impact of Running Late:
Sometimes when things pop up parents don’t end up missing a session, but they end up running late. Again, we understand that sometimes that just happens! But bear in mind that every day we come in and make an individualized treatment plan for each child. When a child is late to a session, we have to take that plan and decide which items are most important and which can be left out, due to time constraints. If we have to do this often, it slows down a child’s progress in therapy because we can’t get to all the activities. And we really want each child to get the best therapy and the most out of it!
If for some reason you do have to cancel an appointment, or you know you’re going to be late, please give us a call. We will be happy to reschedule your child’s session for another day, or another time, or modify things for your session, however, we need to.
